Ary Hoffmann is an applied biologist and ecological geneticist who undertakes research on environmental stress adaptation and pest control in natural, agricultural, and urban settings. His current work includes the development of novel approaches for disease and pest control based on interactions between bacterial symbionts and invertebrate vectors. He also works on suppressing urban mosquitoes locally and overseas, and he is testing genetic guidelines for translocations aimed at reintroducing threatened insects including native grasshoppers. He is a Companion of the Order of Australia and heads a team at the Bio21 Institute where he is a Melbourne Laureate Professor.
